Chest Cross "Crucifixion of Christ"
18th century
Size: 15,5 x 9,5cm
Technique & Material: Copper alloy, casting
Description: Eight-ended “Russian” Cross
The central area represents the crucifixion of Christ. There is relief image of Christ at the top end of the cross, - the God Almighty, the Holy Spirit in a form of a dove and two angels; the writing “Tsar Slavy” is beneath them.
The horizontal crossbar has an added detail – symmetrically located pillars with six-winged seraphs.
There is a bold text at the perimeter of a middle bar – “Bow to Your Cross and Glorify Your Holy Resurrection”. At the ends of the middle bar are the titles – IC XC.
The lower part of the cross represents the city of Jerusalem, mount Golgotha and the head of Adam and the tools of torture to the sides from it (a spear and vinegar-soaked sponge on a staff).
The reverse side of the crucifixion is decorated with a Paschal song – the worship to the Cross: “Cross – the guardian of all the universe, Cross – the beauty of the church, Cross – the orb of kings, Cross – the glory of angels and plague for demons”.
Unique quality of casting, almost ideal state of preservation. Extraordinary exemplar.
